No Room For Manoeuvre is an original piece of work communicating 12 young protagonists’ unique points of view on their current situations and surroundings. Rich in surprises, it shatters stereotypes and reveals deep insights and creativity. It is built around the protagonists’ ideas, using their creativity to explore and communicate themes. With some gifted in art, some in writing, music or poetry, all have well articulated insights into troubling contexts; how these arise and ways of dealing with them.
There is no element of talent contest here. What makes our film unique is that it’s protagonists illustrate what they say about issues affecting disenfranchised young people, with their artistic creativity and other skills. The film pays homage to their trust and willingness to share. Their very diverse personalities resonate throughout the film. What words can best describe it? Powerful, compassionate, troubling, touching and moving, inspirational.
The idea for the film was sparked by the extraordinary problems the director’s son experienced over a four-year period at his secondary school. Together they shaped their ideas to create a treatment that explores not only the challenges that face children who are bullied, but also the traps in which the bullies are ensnared – the idea thereafter became more nuanced and, as the filming progressed, increasingly took on a life of it’s own
